Zombie Dust - Three Floyds Munster, IN
American Pale Ale 6.4%
12 oz bottle
Three Floyds is a family run brewery out of Munster, IN. The brewery was founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Simon along with their father Mike Floyd; thus making the name Three Floyds make sense. These dudes have been cranking out superb beers since their inception and have beer geeks across the United States and the rest of the world gushing words of praise. Incredibly hyped and sought-after, Zombie Dust is one of those special beers that you don’t get many opportunities to try. I was lucky enough to acquire one through an extremely generous friend who had some to spare. It’s time to get familiar with the undead.
I pop the top and pour the beer. This Zombie is most definitely still alive. It looks incredible in the glass. An unwavering orange hued light shimmering in my otherwise dark and gloomy apartment. Straight off the bat my schnoz gets hit with them hops. Yes sir, this beer smells fantastic. The bottle is about a month old so some of the crazy fruity aromatics have subsided, revealing a bit more going on in the background. I’m getting green, vegetal, spicy hops, with a piney citrus undertones. Zombie Dust relies heavily on Citra hops, known for its super tropical fruit notes. The age on the beer shows something different, and I’m digging it.
The flavor really mimics the aroma here. The malt plays a supporting role and perfectly compliments the strong but not overpowering hop character. Fruit is only coming through as a sidekick to the earthy spicy hops. I’m getting a surprisingly soft body considering how powerful I expected the beer to be. Straight up hoppy goodness.
This is one exceptional beer. Aromatic as hell, perfectly balanced, crushable. I wish I had two more hands so I could give this beer four thumbs up. It is most certainly worth the hype and I would love to try it again. I guess I’ll have to wait until the next Zombie Apocalypse...
